Highland Park
Just east of South Pasadena is the colorful, historic Highland Park. Along with the neighboring cities of Eagle Rock and Silverlake, Highland Park has seen a recent renewal that includes an influx of trendy restaurants and bars opening, a revitalization of the many Craftsman and Victorian homes within the city that were suffering from neglect, and an increase in the activity of the community. Over the years a culture of artists, actors, and writers have been attracted to Highland Park and it’s surplus of old, charming character homes.Garvanza: The higher end section of Highland Park is the subdistrict of Garvanza, named after the Garbanzo plants that once flourished in this area. Just like most of Highland Park, the streets within Garvanza are hilly and lined with historic Craftsman homes. In 2007 a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone was implemented to Garvanza which protects and restricts what can be done to the architecture of the structures within this charming neighborhood.
